National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a National test for reading, writing, comprehensive language ability and numeracy established by the education department of the federal government of Australia. The test, which began in 2008, is now part of every school calendar in Australia. The examination will be held in the second week of May every year and all students from grade 3/5/7/9 in all schools in Australia will be required to take the test.
In the latest NAPLAN results released by the Queensland department of education, schools in Gold Coast have improved their overall performance in both the national and Queensland rankings. Somerset College, a one-stop private school from preschool to 12th grade, remains top of the list, which ranked first in all grades 3/5/7/9 in the test. Kings Christian College and A.B. Paterson which are private colleges, rank as the second in elementary and secondary schools. In terms of public schools, Broadbeach state elementary school and Benowa state high school are the best performing public elementary school and middle school respectively. Varsity College, which contains classes from preschool to 12th grade, also did well.
Donna Pendergast, professor and director of the Griffith institute of education, said: "schools from pre-school to 12th grade have a more independent and systematic approach to learning. If primary and secondary schools are separated, students need a transition period to adapt to the learning styles of different schools.” "The NAPLAN exam is an important tool for us to measure the level of students at present. Although it cannot fully reflect the comprehensive level of students, it can help us track and detect the progress of students from primary school to high school."
